At Newhouse Builds we pride ourselves on building it better. We set out to make a product that showcases genuinely custom features while staying honest about budget — homes that feel considered in every room, not just in the listing photos.
We are a Rapid City company. We build for our neighbors in the Black Hills, we answer our own phone, and our reputation travels by word of mouth in a community where that still matters.

We take on a limited number of homes each year. That is deliberate — it keeps the custom details from getting value engineered out, and it keeps one point of accountability on every project.
Max Eckelman
Max Eckelman leads Newhouse Builds with a background shaped by both design and construction. He grew up around the building world through his father, an architect and builder in Oregon, and spent years learning how good projects come together from both sides: the plans on paper and the work in the field.
After studying business management, Max worked in administration, project management, custom homes and commercial construction. Over time, he moved deeper into managing full projects, coordinating trades, solving design issues and making sure the finished build matched what was promised at the beginning.
In 2020, Max moved his family to the Black Hills for the same reasons many Newhouse clients want to build here: more space, stronger community and a better place to raise a family. What started with one local build grew through word of mouth, Parade of Homes exposure, and clients who noticed the difference in communication, detail, budget guidance and follow-through.
That background is still the way Newhouse Builds works today. The company is built around helping clients early, before every answer is figured out, then guiding the project from lot review and plans to renderings, budget, construction, custom details and final walkthrough.

Consultation
We meet, walk the site or the house, and talk honestly about scope, style, timeline and budget range. No pressure and no obligation.
Feasibility & site study
Lot survey, grade and drainage, setbacks, utilities and views, plus verification of access, soils and buildable area.
Design & renderings
Floor plans developed at real scale, then photoreal exterior and interior renderings so you approve the actual home, not a concept.
Selections & millwork drawings
Finishes, fixtures and lighting specified, and shop drawings produced for every cabinet run, closet and built-in.
Budget & agreement
An itemized construction budget built from real selections, reviewed line by line, then a clear contract and schedule.
Construction
Permits, engineering and inspections handled. Weekly updates, a clean job site and consistent trade relationships from footing to trim.
Millwork & finish
Our shop delivers and installs the cabinetry, closets, paneling and built-ins — the phase where the home stops looking like a house.
Walkthrough & warranty
A detailed final walkthrough, punch list completed before closing, orientation on your systems, and a warranty period after move-in.
Custom Designs.
Anyone can order a luxury package. We build the parts of the home that can't be ordered — the woodworking, the cabinetry, the closets, the built-ins that make a house feel genuinely bespoke.
Custom, not selected
Most builders hand you a finish sheet. We draw the cabinet, mill the door and set the reveal for your room, your ceiling height, your light.
Built in-house
Our millwork, cabinetry and closets are drawn and built for your rooms, then installed by crews who know how the details are supposed to land.
